Describe the circumstances in which you first met?

We met in a nightclub through extended mutual friends, a week later we went out on a date and we’ve been together ever since. Literally from our first date we have been together ever since.

What are the things that you both love, or that characterise your relationship?

Food, wine, holidays, travel, socialising with friends and family. We are pretty relaxed couple really, down to earth. We just enjoy spending time together on the weekends.

Define the style of your wedding and how did you incorporate your personalities into it?

We just chose things we liked. It needed to look quite good, have the wow factor when people walked in, the glamour thing. We wanted it to be fun and we wanted as many of our friends and family as possible to come. We wanted people who wouldn’t have necessarily have met outside of our wedding to sit at the same tables together and integrate, the various sides of our guest lists so it was a really social and fun night.

Why did you choose that location and/or venue?

We just fell in love with it the moment we saw it. It ticked all the boxes, all the criteria in our minds. We didn’t want it to finish and have last drinks at half past eleven. We wanted the wow factor and we felt like it had that, I had always loved the idea of a marquee. We had jokingly said many years ago, before we were even engaged, that we would get married in the Hunter because we have always loved it. We’ve spent a lot of time in the Hunter and we’ve spent a lot of time drinking wine!

What was the most challenging aspect of planning your wedding?

The most challenging was the fact that it wasn’t in Sydney and I couldn’t just duck over and have a look at the things that I needed in the marquee or the food or the wine. Everything was just that little bit more challenging because you had to allocate a weekend to go there and meet with suppliers. We didn’t get to look and see and touch and feel everything so we were taking a lot of it on face value that it was going to be good products. Also using rural suppliers who didn’t necessarily have the same sense of urgency that we had, the geographic challenge.

What did you particularly enjoy about your wedding planning journey?

The whole thing was fun really, at the end of the day I enjoyed planning it. I enjoyed just coming up with the vision and putting it all together. I would say 90% of it came off & 10% didn’t.

What assistance did you have with planning your wedding?

We got a lot of our friends to help out with things like the cake, the flowers, planning, wedding day coordination, our friends were really helpful. Also friends were supportive in just listening to whatever was going on at the time that we needed to just chew the fat on. We were fortunate enough to have friends who’ve got the skills we needed to put a wedding together. We didn’t need a lot of professional help really, it was only the photographer and the dj, everything else was either friends or people we knew. The band we knew from the pub. I made my own budget and spreadsheets, we did it all ourselves. Ewedding was useful for the wedding website, RSVP’s and general information for guests. That was more for the international guests than the locals.

Which features that you incorporated into your wedding were you particularly proud of on the actual day?

The band in the middle of the pool was good, that was the first thing that everyone saw when they came in. The flowers and the cake looked amazing and they were done by friends. Maybe it meant even more to me because friends did it but I really really appreciated those things on the day, I thought they looked beautiful. The thing that pretty much all of our guests said that the stand out thing that they remembered was our photobooth. Everyone loved that.

What is your one stand-out memory of the day?

Emma: Liam’s first words to me when I saw him on the aisle and his face when he saw me.

Liam: Emma walking up the aisle.

What one piece of advice would you offer to anyone reading this and planning their own wedding?

Emma: I think for girls its important to go and look and touch everything that they want as part of their wedding, like all the decorations, if that’s important to you as it was to me. They spend a huge amount of their time on that, coming up with their idea, their vision. Also getting the right dress obviously, don’t buy two!

Liam: Don’t stress about things you can’t control. You can’t control the weather. It rained for 28 straight days before our wedding so I think I was right to stress about that but there is no point. Just make sure you have a contingency plan. Also, for the blokes, just pick your battles. Don’t try and get involved with too much because at the end of the day its only about 30% your wedding anyway! Only argue about the stuff that you are really passionate about and only offer an opinion when asked! With the suppliers you have to be very specific in all your instructions. Don’t feel bad about making sure 110% that you are getting what you want because you can’t do it again.
